A child prodigy growing up on the Caribbean Island of Barbados, Carlton Murrell began exploring his artistic talent as a young child, drawing and painting various aspect of every day life. After migrating to the United States, Murrell studied painting at the Arts Students League in New York and Illustration with Earl Mayan and Steve Gross.
An early and continuing influence on Murrell’s style has been the European Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. Drawing on these influences, Murrell’s layering of paint, short strokes and limited palette range has produced a signature painterly style. While influenced by European style and aesthetics, Murrell has strongly infused his work with his rich Caribbean Island heritage and his experiences living as an immigrant in Urban America, to create a body of work that is not only pleasing to the eyes, technically strong, but interpretive and often though provoking.
Murrell has had hundreds of group and solo shows at venues across the United States and the Caribbean including Brooklyn Museum, The United Nations, John Jay College, Hunter College, Pace University, Savacou Gallery , SATTA Gallery, Clinton Hill art Gallery, Art Off the Main, Great Neck Library, Salmagundi Art Club, Skylight Gallery, Brooklyn
